The new location for the Breathitt County Museum is one step closer to opening after a status meeting on April 1.
Architect Sabrina Oaks, Director Janie Griffith, representatives from the state, and Omni Construction Supervisor Ty Carter met for a walk-through to review progress and identify the final projects to check off the list.
At stake was a Certificate of Occupancy needed to begin moving artifacts, displays, and other items to the building in anticipation of a fundraising event on April 17 and 20.
As painters worked to touch up areas and put the finishing touches on shelves and other areas, the group walked around the newly renovated structure, built in 1936.
Breathitt County native Sabrina Oaks, of Tate Hill Jacobs Architects firm, discussed the progress and work completed by the construction crews.
State officials discussed minor issues with doors, locks, paint, and several parking spaces.
After the review, state officials issued a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO), which allows museum staff and volunteers to begin working in the building in anticipation of the move from Broadway to College Avenue.
Building and grounds inspectors noted that the elevator needed to be turned on and load-tested (required every 5 years) before the permanent Certificate of Occupancy could be issued.
Griffith and other officials contacted DC Elevator, and representatives were in Jackson on Tuesday working on the elevator before the next inspection.
The Breathitt County Museum is scheduled to host a Jail & Bail event at the newly remodeled facility on Friday, April 17, and on Monday, April 20. Individuals can issue a $50 “warrant” to have a local resident “arrested.” The prisoners will be held at least fifteen minutes and will then need to raise enough “bail” to be released by the “Honorable Judge Cluster Howard.”
The event will help raise funds to develop new displays for the museum and other needs as the county institution changes location.
“Warrants” can be purchased by contacting Janie Griffith or the Breathitt County Museum at 606-666-4159.
