More than fifty Breathitt County children enjoyed a day of fishing and smiles as part of the 2026 Annual Kids Fishing Event held on June 20 at the Fish Shack Paylake on Boone Fork.
The event, hosted by Breathitt County Game Warden Tayler Davis, was sponsored by twenty local businesses and organizations, including the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, the League of Kentucky Sportsmen, and Operation Unite.
The program emphasized the theme of “Get Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs” and encouraged a love of fishing and the outdoors among children and caregivers.
The event was hosted at the Fish Shack Paylake, on Boone Fork at Vancleve.
The four-hour fishing event allowed young anglers between five and thirteen years of age to catch and keep five fish for the day. The sponsors also helped teach the angler how to fillet and process the fish.
In addition, each child received a free fishing pole along with a tackle box containing hooks, sinkers, and a fish stringer.
“We want to thank each sponsor that had a part in helping to fund this event,” Davis said.
He acknowledged Tight Lines Bait & Tackle (Justin and Cassie Hollon), Breathitt County UNITE Coalition (Karen Clemons Griffith), Breathitt Funeral Home (Jeff Hamilton), YPK of Jackson, Jackson Tractor Supply, Jackson Walmart, Jackson Windows & Siding, KY Farm Bureau (Janet Smith), Kentucky River Medical Center, Stoney River Banks Farm (Rita Lynn Lawson), Trinity Monuments & Mausoleums (Earl Chapman Sr), Jackson McDonald’s, Howard Chiropractic (Dr. Steven Howard), Vic’s Excavation (Vic Turner), Rent-A-Center of Jackson, and Fish Shack Paylake as 2026 sponsors.
