Jeff Honeycutt tendered his resignation as Breathitt boys’ basketball head coach Wednesday, April 30, 2025, meeting with the team he leaves behind in an emotional gathering at the Coliseum late in the afternoon prior to the end of the school day.
Honeycutt most recently led the Bobcats to the program’s 13th state tournament appearance where Breathitt lost by one point to North Laurel, after falling in the 14th Regional championship game a year earlier. In his two-year stay at Breathitt the highly respected coach established an overall 44-21 won-loss record and a 10-0 mark in 55th District play. Included in the program’s accomplishments under his watch, along with the 2025 14th Regional Championship, are two 55th District Championships and a 14th Region All ‘A’ Championship (2024).
Honeycutt returns to his home county where he has accepted the head coaching position at Knott Central where he not only played as a high school basketball player, but where he previously secured four 14th Regional Championships as head coach of Knott’s girls’ program.
Coach Honeycutt’s stint at Breathitt afforded him the opportunity to coach his son, Joseph, for two years, the latter of which both, father and son, shared the rare opportunity to win a regional championship and experience the Sweet Sixteen at Rupp Arena as coach and player, respectively.
Jeff and wife, Kelly, who also had previously worked in the BCS System, endeared themselves to the Breathitt community in the time they were here making dear friends along the way, notably at Highland Turner Elementary, where Jeff served as principal. Joseph also endeared himself to his teammates and Blue Faithful as could be heard after each made three-pointer with the chant of “Joe, Joe, Joe!”
On behalf of Breathitt County, thank you, Honeycutt Family, for two great years. We wish you continued success in your future endeavors.
