February 17, 2025

Matthew H. Gilbert, 79 of Jackson, entered into eternal rest on Sunday February 16, 2025, at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center in Hazard.
Born on May 14, 1945, he was the son of the late Faris and Jane Roberts Gilbert. Matthew was also preceded in death by his brothers, Vernon "Faris Jr." Gilbert, and an infant brother, as well as his first wife and the mother of his children, Cheryl Fairchild Gilbert. He was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Joshua A. Gilbert and Michael W. Gilbert Jr.
After graduating from Breathitt County High School in 1963, Matthew moved to Cincinnati, where he married Cheryl Fairchild. They started a family together, and Matthew dedicated many years to his career at Cincinnati Gas and Electric, where he worked as a meter specialist for over 30 years.
Following his retirement, Matthew returned to Breathitt County, where he embraced a life full of hobbies and craftsmanship. A skilled woodworker, he spent countless hours crafting one-of-a-kind birdhouses, toys, and bowls. His love for nature also drew him to fishing, bushhogging, gardening, and camping, with one of his favorite pastimes being visits to Bryants Creek, where he found peace and contentment.
Matthew was a devoted member of the First Church of God in Jackson for many years, where he contributed not only with his faith but also with his hands, helping in the construction of the church's new building just a few years ago. His dedication to his faith and his church family was an integral part of his life.
Matthew is survived by his three sons: Matthew C. Gilbert, Michael W. Gilbert (Tonya), and Aaron M. Gilbert; ten grandchildren: Matthew C. Gilbert II, Derrick S. Gilbert, Aaron Gilbert Jr. (Sara), Mackenzie Thompson (Josh), Zachary Gilbert, Caleb Gilbert, Tabitha Gilbert, Cody Gilbert, Isabella Gilbert, and Addison Gilbert; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert "Bob" Gilbert (Sundra) and John Gilbert (Donna); one sister, Virgie Johnson (Jack); and one sister-in-law, Anna Gilbert. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Matthew always had a special place in his heart for Billy and Zula Fairchild, his beloved in-laws whose love and friendship meant so much to him.
Visitation for Matthew will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Breathitt Funeral Home, beginning at 11:00 AM. His funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM, with Bobby Hollon officiating. Matthew will be laid to rest in the Gilbert Family Cemetery at Highland, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Matthew’s family and friends will remember him not only for his beautiful handcrafted pieces but he also leaves cherished memories in the hearts of those who knew him.
A healthy Breathitt County requires great community news.
