Shirley (Spicer) Spencer, age 72, of Jackson, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2026, at UK Hospital in Lexington after suffering a heart attack.
Shirley was born on October 4, 1953, at Home Place Hospital in Ary, Perry County, near Hazard, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Green Spicer and Sarah (Little) Spicer.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Burnam Spencer, her brother Virgil Spicer, and her niece Jennifer Diane (Jett) Roberts.
Shirley worked as an assistant librarian at the Breathitt County Library in Jackson, Kentucky, where she later retired.
She loved her work, her community, and the people she served.
She is survived by her daughter Sarah Rose Fugate (Kevin Turner); her sister Gertrude (Spicer) Jett of Florence, Kentucky; and two granddaughters, Courtney Brooke (Justin) Addison and Kinsey Blake Fugate (Dallas Gross), both of Jackson, Kentucky.
Shirley was blessed with five greatgrandchildren: Micah Addison, Canyon Addison, Bryce Addison, Cassie Addison, and Wessley Gross.
She is also survived by her nieces Lisa (Spicer) McClees of Berea, Kentucky, and Charlotte (Jett) Gross of Cold Spring.
Kentucky; greatnieces Breelyn McClees, Katherine Jett, and Joanna Roberts; and greatnephews Gage McClees, Tyler Gross, Derrick Jett, Jordan Gross, Charles Roberts, and Terrance Roberts; survived as well by many cousins whom she loved dearly.
Shirley will be remembered for her lifelong love of Jesus, her devotion to her family, and her gentle kindness. She cherished her little dog, Cujo, who brought her joy and companionship.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
