Panbowl Gets 3,000 New Trout

Posted

The Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service announced that 3,000 rainbow trout had been released into Panbowl Lake on March 5.

The Breathitt County release was part of an annual statewide initiative designed to replenish Kentucky Waterways for anglers and sportsmen.

Wolf Creek Hatchery is located at Jamestown, Kentucky, just below the Wolf Creek Dam that impounds Lake Cumberland in Pulaski County.

The center hatches and releases more than 1,000,000 trout each year.  The total estimated annual release is over 275,000 pounds.

The fish were trucked from Jamestown to Jackson and released at various locations in the lake to help disperse the population for sportsmen in a cooperative effort with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Recent studies by economic analysts estimate that the direct impact on the state economy from fishing streams where the trout are released is $50 million.

According to records, the hatchery raises brook, brown, and rainbow trout and releases them into 125 waterways across the state.

The Panbowl release was planned to increase the variety of fish in the lake and help it recover from recent construction activity in the area.

No announcement has been made about the next release date.
