Emergency crews responded to the report of a single-vehicle accident on Highway 30 West near Shoulderblade late Monday night.
Fire and rescue crews from the Canoe Community and Jackson Fire Department responded just before midnight to an accident 7.4 miles from Jackson at the mouth of Spencer Hollow Road.
Crews found a gray Nissan Versa on its top in the creek.
According to reports, Kelly Creech was traveling West on Highway 30 after completing his work shift when he swerved to miss an animal in the roadway. He lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center line, and drove into a ditch. The vehicle reentered the roadway and started to roll. It came to rest in the creek after knocking down some trees.
Creech was unable to exit the vehicle on his own and was stuck in the near-zero water for several minutes.
Neighbors who lived at the mouth of Spencer Road said they heard the wreck and “knew it was bad.” They helped get Creech out of the vehicle after they located the crash.
“He was shaking and cold,” the neighbor said. “We placed him in a car to warm him up.”
Creech suffered multiple injuries, including several lacerations to the face and head.
He was transported to the Kentucky River Medical Center by Breathitt-Wolfe Ambulance Service.
The accident remains under investigation.
