A Breathitt County man was arrested on Monday and charged with one count of filing a false report after he said children were drowning in a nearby stream.
Phillip Aaron Hudson, 36, was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail at 8:36 a.m. on Monday, January 26, after the incident at 1960 Quicksand Road.
According to reports, the Kentucky State Police dispatch in Hazard received a third-party call reporting a drowning child at Miller’s Trailer Park at 3:45 a.m. on January 26. The State Police request assistance from the Jackson Police Department.
Officer Jeramie Long responded to the scene 1.9 miles out on Quicksand Road, on extremely slick roads, and located the caller, but did not find anyone in the water.
The caller told dispatchers that Hudson came to his house, knocked frantically on the door, and yelled for help. Hudson told the caller to contact 911 and get assistance “to locate kids that were drowning” in Watkins Branch near Miller's Trailer Court.
After searching the area, officers located Hudson at his home.
According to sources, the Hudson told police officials that he “went out to smoke” and heard the screams of children who were drowning and needed “EMS before they died.” Hudson also told officers that there was “baby feces” in his shower and he “believed a baby was dead in his home.”
A search of the home did not locate a child, only some “cat feces” in the shower.
Officer Long arrested Hudson at 4:33 a.m. after officers determined that there was no drowning and that Hudson allegedly made the claims knowing them to be false.
Hudson is charged with a Class D felony. He is facing one to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted.
During the questions, Hudson admitted to Officer Long that he used methamphetamine “around 2-3 days ago” and told officers that he “heard something moving in the woods across the road and thought it was children drowning.”
Hudson is scheduled for arraignment before Judge Gary Salyers in Breathitt District Court.
