New Year’s Eve Crash Knocks Out Power to Hundreds

Posted

A single-vehicle crash on Highway 1110 knocked out power to nearly a fourth of Breathitt County.

The accident occurred on December 31, shortly after 12:50 p.m., approximately 1.4 miles from Highway 15 in the Haddix community.

According to police reports, Bradedan Grimes, 21, of Rough Creek Road in London, Kentucky, was driving a 2017 Nissan Rogue LL west on Highway 1110 when a small gray car swerved into his lane and forced him off the road.  Grime’s vehicle dropped off the roadway into the ditch line and up onto the bank, striking a utility pole.

Following the impact, his vehicle Rogue ended up on its side in the ditch line near the pole.

The force of the crash snapped the top off the pole, igniting a fire on the ground and at the top of the shattered pole.

The blaze and the impact knocked out electrical service to much of Highway 1110, Lost Creek, and the area along Highway 476.

Grimes and his passenger, Savannah J. Grimes, were not injured in the crash.

The residents impacted by the outage scrambled to stay warm as temperatures hovered around 30 degrees.

Crews from AEP in Hazard responded to the scene and replaced the pole, restoring power to all affected areas after a five-hour outage.

The accident “severely damaged” the vehicle used to escort vehicles hauling wide loads and rendered it “undrivable.”

Breathitt County Sheriff John Hollan is in charge of the investigation.
