Carl Buford Gross, 68, of Hazel Green, KY and born in Breathitt County, KY passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, WVA of a brief illness.
Carl was a dedicated and hardworking man. In his early adult years, he set off alongside his brother France, to work in Lima, Ohio where he established himself as a successful meat cutter. He later devoted his last years doing what he loved, logging in the hills of Eastern Kentucky. He was widely respected for his strong work ethic, humble nature, and generous willingness to help those he loved whenever possible. Carl greatly valued time spent with family and friends and took pride in just being outdoors. He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures and will be fondly remembered for his kindness, great strength and unwavering devotion to his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Valerie Phillips of Lima, OH. Stepsons: Michael Anteau of Hazel Green, KY and Shawn Anteau of Monroe, MI. Grandchildren: Issac, Austin and Kole Allsup; Brothers: Harvey Jr. (Leah) Gross of Sharpsburg, KY, Fred Gross, Roger Gross and Granville (Liz) Gross all of Jackson, KY. Sisters: Wilma Gross, Esther (Ron) Mullins, Brenda (Letch Jr.) Hounshell, Katherine Gross, Linda (Coursey) Morris, all of Jackson, KY and Mary Hardin of Omaha, Nebraska, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will deeply miss him. Carl’s memory will continue to live on through the many lives he touched and the love he shared with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Juanita Riggs Gross, his parents: Harvey and Ida Turner Gross, his brothers: France and Johnny Ray Gross and other loved ones who welcomed him home.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 11:00 am at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel with Roger Turner officiating the service. Burial will be in the Hall and Gross Cemetery, Mill Creek Road of Canoe, KY. Visitation will begin on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 6:00-9:00 pm. Deaton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers: Michael Anteau, Shawn Anteau, Issac Allsup, Kole Allsup, family and friends.
