The Breathitt County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday and moved close to opening its new vocational school on Lakeside.
During the fifty-four-minute meeting, the Board approved a variety of reports, consent, and discussion items, including several payments to a vendor working to complete the new Breathitt County Area Technology Center.
No opening date for the new vo-tech campus has been announced, but work is nearing completion on the new multi-million-dollar education center, set to open soon.
The Board approved several payments totaling nearly $200,000, resulting from change orders and inspections for the building.
The Board approved the minutes from the last meeting as well as the bills and treasurer’s reports.
Members of the Board approved several fundraisers and a Memorandum of Understanding with New Horizons Academy.
The Board recognized Isabell Smith and Tucker Neace's Cross-Country accomplishments at state competition and the winners of the Elder Abuse Poster Contest, including Jesselyn Eversole-Parks, Tristan Davis, Chelsea Johnson, Laken Combs, Laci Little, and Amirah Howard.
The meeting progressed rapidly, and Board Members explained that the debates and discussions that took place during the work session on the Thursdays before the meetings helped prepare them for the meeting. These work sessions are open to the public and often help make the regular sessions more organized.
