Historic White Flash and Black Cat Saloon: A Legacy Reborn
April 03, 2025

The White Flash and The Black Cat: A Legacy Revived The White Flash was established in the mid-1930s and has remained a staple of Jackson, KY, at its current location—1144 Main Street—since 1939. Throughout the decades, it has changed hands multiple times but continues to serve the community, standing strong through economic shifts, fires, and the test of time. The history of The White Flash is so rich and widespread that it couldn’t possibly be captured in just one article. Most recently, The White Flash has undergone significant renovations under the leadership of Travis Ritchie and his wife, Jerica Brooke. Their dedication to preserving its legacy while modernizing the space has brought new life to this historic diner. The White Flash has also adjusted its hours to better serve the community during events hosted by the newly revived Black Cat. The Black Cat, which predates The White Flash, was once one of Main Street’s most notorious saloons. While its documented history is scarce, it was a thriving establishment in the late 1800s and early 1900s, during Jackson’s coal boom. Now, Travis and Jerica have brought it back to life as a venue for live music and entertainment on the weekends. Guests can enjoy the legendary White Flash burger—famous for nearly 90 years—while taking in the lively atmosphere of The Black Cat. The Black Cat is still undergoing renovations. It has already become the home of the Hard $ Dollar Band, a talented group of musicians that keeps the crowd entertained. When they’re not performing at festivals or other venues, you can catch them rocking the stage at The Black Cat. The Hard $ Dollar Band features: Keenas McIntosh Jr. – A vocalist with an outlaw country style reminiscent of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard. He plays rhythm guitar. Jerica Brooke – A powerhouse lead female vocalist with a stunning stage presence, performing everything from Donna Summer to Stevie Nicks and Loretta Lynn to Ella Langley. Billy Dieringer – A charismatic entertainer who plays rhythm guitar, sings, and occasionally takes the drum kit, channeling the energy of legends like David Lee Roth and Nirvana. David Combs – A bassist and vocalist with a sound ranging from ZZ Top to the Kentucky Headhunters. Andy Combs – A dynamic drummer with jazz, country, and classic rock influences, now adding backup vocals to his skill set. Travis Ritchie – Lead guitarist with a talent for everything from chicken pickin’ to rock riffs, with vocal stylings influenced by CCR and Tom Petty. With The Black Cat hosting live music, it's an exciting time for local talent and music lovers alike. Many different entertainers visit the venue, and a grand opening is coming soon! Doug and Sue Johnson have owned the property since 1986, and Sue, a beloved retired Breathitt County teacher, still visits often. Her support and connection to the community have helped The White Flash and The Black Cat continue to thrive. Be sure to stop by, grab a legendary burger, and enjoy the incredible atmosphere brought to life by Travis and Jerica’s vision. The White Flash and The Black Cat are back, better than ever, and ready to serve Jackson for years to come!
A healthy Breathitt County requires great community news.
