Three Others Severely Injured
A Breathitt County woman was killed and three other people were injured in a violent two-vehicle crash on Alpine Hill Tuesday.
Tiffany Beth Campbell, 37, of Highway 30 West, died at the scene after a Chevy Malibu LS, driven by Loora Frost, struck her Chevy HHR LT near the intersection of Highway 15 and Roark Ridge Road.
Campbell’s mother, Patsy A. “Pat” (Collins) Campbell, 59, was severely injured in the crash and had to be cut from the vehicle by members of the Jackson Fire Department using the Jaws of Life. She was later transported by helicopter to the Pikeville Medical Center for treatment of multiple injuries. A six-year-old child in the back seat was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Pediatric Trauma Center for injuries he sustained.
Loora Frost, the driver of the other vehicle, was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia, to treat multiple injuries.
A 911 call reported the crash at 12:31 p.m. on the hill between Jiffy Mart and Walmart. Police and rescue team members arrived at the collision three minutes later and closed Highway 15.
Witnesses and other drivers pried open the rear passenger door of the HHR and removed the small child from the back seat before emergency crews arrived. Several nurses and medical workers who happened upon the wreck worked with him and the other patients while fire crews extricated both Frost and the elder Campbell. They were all transported to the Kentucky River Medical Center by ambulance for triage and transfer to the trauma centers.
According to reports, Frost was traveling south on Highway 15 when she crossed the double yellow line and swerved into the northbound lane, nearly hitting another vehicle. As she corrected and attempted to return to the southbound lane, she struck the HHR driven by Campbell nearly head-on. Officials believe that speed played a factor in the crash.
Highway 15 remained closed for nearly four hours while Kentucky State Police Accident Reconstruction teams and the Jackson Police Department surveyed, mapped, and photographed the area. A drone from the Perry County Sheriff’s Office was employed to give investigators clearer aerial images of the scene to determine the events that led to the crash and to document the vehicles' final dispositions.
Tiffany Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene by Breathitt County Coroner Hargis Epperson. It took fire crews over thirty minutes to extricate Campbell from the vehicle. The Breathitt County Coroner’s Office transported Campbell to Frankfort for a complete autopsy.
JPD Officer Michael Robinson and the Kentucky State Police are continuing the investigation.
A healthy Breathitt County requires great community news.
